CHRISTMAS MATHS LESSON
As the Christmas season came into full swing, I was given a very special opportunity to create a Christmas themed class plan for 1st of ESO Mathematics. Aroa, the 1st of ESO mathematics teacher, and myself worked together to try to combine mathematics with Christmas. Aroa came up with the great idea to use Christmas recipes from the United States as an opportunity to teach about the different units of measurement used in the US (Units of measurement in English). I selected some of the most classic recipes I could think of, in addition to some more festive options. Next I explained the differences in units of measurement used in the United States, also known as the Standard System of Measurement. We discussed more specifically the differences between volumetric units and the different units of temperature. I explained how people in the United States use teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, pints, quarts, gallons and degrees Fahrenheit when cooking and baking in their homes.
The students we next tasked with converting the units of measurement in a given recipe to SI units. The students then had the option of making the recipes at home, and bringing them in to share with the class! Each group of 2-3 students re-wrote the recipe in SI units and explained the converted recipe to the class before sharing their sweet treat! Next week we will talk more about Christmas tradition in the United States and other English-speaking countries, in addition to learning some traditional Christmas carols! I have so enjoyed my time working in the bilingual program so far, especially when it provides new and creative avenues for learning!
